Ford "Mr. Rock n' Roll Detective" Fairlane is experiencing problems, and it's not with the opposite sex. One of them is that all the rock stars pay him with drum sticks, koala bears, food processors and bicycle shorts. Another one of them is that all his employers that want him to find a girl named Zuzu Petals get killed. Why didn't he become a fisherman's detective instead? A must-see for Andrew Dice Clay fans.
A Brooklyn roughneck goes to L.A. to become a rock star and ends up becoming the rock and roll world's personal private detective. His rock star clients love him while everyone else loves to hate him.<br/><br/>This movie was blackballed from the get-go simply because it starred Andrew Clay (and Ed O'Neill who at the time was also being attacked for his role as Al Bundy). It was never promoted or hyped or even given a chance to succeed. I saw this movie my senior year in high school the night it premiered and wasn't sorry then nor am I sorry now that I own it on DVD.<br/><br/>If you can put aside the ignorance of the "Dice" haters, that can't seem to differentiate when a person is being him/herself or when they are acting, you'll enjoy this film. As Clay once said himself, "I'm an actor that can't get a job because I'm too good at acting." <br/><br/>It's blatantly low budget which made it a B movie from it's inception but that's another big attraction. Is it filled with rim shot toilet humor? Yes, but this was never meant to be Shakespeare, it was meant to be entertainment.<br/><br/>Those who denounce Clay for his act and this movie are up there with the other pseudo-intellectuals that call Chris Farley and Jim Carrey movies sophomoric... DUH! Not every movie is made with the Oscars in mind, some are made for the mere pleasure of simple minded, belly laughing amusement. If you can't enjoy a movie like that once in a while then you should instead rent/buy a true tragic waste of film... like Troy, where ancient Greeks speak with British accents. What's up with that?
The Adventures of Ford Fairlane looks pretty much at the Diceman at his stand-up comedy best. But, this time, he has a character and is a rock and roll detective. As usual he is the offensive Dice. Off-color, crude, and for me (a rabid Dice fan) utterly dead pan funny. But though I find Andrew Dice Clay to be a good actor, many people might see this movie and think that he is just using this film as an excuse for people to see his stand-up act. Well, like the film, the opinions are two sided. You either love the Diceman's comedy, or utterly hate it. I'm going for the upper. Great comedy and entertainment in this block-buster that rocketed Dice. A+
It's especially doomed by a strained script that recalls certain bottom-of-the-barrel Bob Hope vehicles of the 50s in its attempts to be brittle and self-mocking in its humor.
